Learning Chinese is considered as one of the major steps to help non-Chinese speaking students integrate in the society, continue further studies and start their career in Hong Kong. Through an all-rounded Chinese Language learning, we are dedicated to developing students’ competency in Chinese Language as well as an understanding and appreciation towards Chinese culture.
Further to the e-Textbook Scheme proposed by the EDB in April 2012, Delia Memorial School developed the curriculum of Chinese as a Second Language in the form of the e-curriculum. Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong was invited to become our collaborative partner with Dr. K.Y. Loh, Dr. M.K. Lau and Dr. W.W. Ki as the consultants of this project.
Our e-curriculum is based on the textbooks of units 1-4 of “Chinese as a Second Language” which was first developed in 2004. The contents of the teaching materials were all revised. Enhancements were made to include videos, sound effects and input of Chinese characters accordingly to the needs of our students. Lesson activities are now made to link to the Internet, so that learning may become more interesting and motivating. Other than the Cantonese programme, a Putonghua version was also developed and offered to our students.
The Putonghua programme includes the study of phonetics, vocabulary, sentence patterns, grammar, and discourse. To make learning more interesting, multimedia becomes an essential part of the programme. Interesting topics like personal identity, family life, school life, shopping, education, and leisure are used.
Our students can access the learning materials with their tablet PCs during class and at home. Parents are also encouraged to access the learning platform with their children, so that they can develop a closer relationship with their children as well as adapting to the local Hong Kong society.
Assessment is an integral part of learning and teaching. Various assessment methods are applied to assess students’ learning performance throughout the learning process for feedback and improvement purpose. In addition, diversified international assessments are offered to meet the needs of different students including General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE), General Certificate of Education (GCE), Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) and Putonghua Shuiping Ceshi (PSC) (PSC: National Putonghua Proficiency Test).
Apart from using the funding from the Education Bureau (EDB) to facilitate grouping, additional resources and deployment for learning effectiveness enhancement, the school also continues to participate in EDB’s seed projects, school-based support services, and various partnership schemes with tertiary institutes for teaching sharing and professionalism development of the teaching team.
